DJ and the Boys needed to get out of the house today for a realtor to show it. So we decided to waste some time at the local Petsmart. The dogs get a plethora of sensory input, and I get free entertainment. While Fuego did his best Walmart Greeter imitation, Mocha gravitated to the glass cases housing the well, umm, rodents. Guinea pigs, hamsters and rats that had been moving about in their habitats as they usually did, suddenly came to a stop. Yikes! BIG FACE! BIG GRAY FACE AND YELLOW EYES! They seemed to be shrieking these things before running for cover. This did not discourage Mocha one bit. In fact, it seemed to fascinate him. And then, one of the hamsters did something that had Mocha eating out of his hand, figuratively of course. He came out and reached up on the glass as if to say, "hello Mr. Big Dog, how are you today?" That was all it took for the big dog to decide he HAD to have this little friend. His total focus was on his new little buddy. Even when the hamster left him and returned to his plastic dome, he stayed fixated. Patiently waiting. Watching. Staring. Willing himself into the glass case. Fuego became bored with this quickly. We decided it was time to go. But the big dog refused. Instead of walking with us to the register, he sat. Refusing to leave his new friend. This continued for a half an hour. Mocha never lost focus. After explaining that one swipe of his big paw would likely kill his new friend and that hamsters and dogs just are not made to be playmates, Mocha finally relented. We left with just a few forlorn looks from the big gray dog. He really, really wanted a new pal. Maybe another day.
